College Life
1. I never took it in high school.
2. I didn't put forth the necessary effort in past classes to really learn it.
I taught myself how to compute fractions a while back and feel really proud of that, but for the life of me cannot make too much sense of Algebra. To me, it's a dirty word. LOL
I did manage to learn how to convert binary to decimal numbers and vice versa when I took an introductory computer class last semester, but I would have to look at it again in order to be able to figure it out. Out of sight, out of mind: you know how the saying goes. So there is hope, but this Algebra stuff has really got me in a funk!
This is all that I'm gonna say right now about college. I will find more to say about my adventures tomorrow, after a good night's shuteye. I've had my nose buried in my laptop "computing" all day long. I have different projects that I'm working on around here including converting my paper files into computer ones and using Microsoft Access to keep track of contacts.
I am fortunate enough to be able to watch lynda.com's video library at no charge due to being an IU student. I have learned quite a bit of computer savviness from the presenters on there. They are professionals and deliver excellent content. Paired with the IT training self-learning courses sponsored by Indiana University, I am fortunate enough to have quite a bit of excellent learning materials at my fingertips. One of my academic goals is to acquire my Certification in Microsoft Office.
Nite all!
P.S. After previewing this entry, I noticed that no paragraphs were inserted so I will have to look into that. I apologize if it appears that everything's running together. :D
How many variations of Math CAN THERE BE??!!
I was fortunate enough to come across a nice college Algebra textbook that a niece let me have which I perceive to be an excellent book for those college students who, like myself, aren't too keen on Math. I am starting to practice my rusty skills from the beginning of this book. But, alas, when I start looking at the topics, I find that there may be important information that is, well, omitted from a certain chapter.
This forces me to do some more investigating. "Is there more to this topic than what's presented in this book?" "What if I don't check out other variations of this problem and it happens to sneak up on me during a class, not so much the actual topic itself but something that WOULD HAVE HELPED me grasp a certain concept if ONLY I had dug deeper online???"
Take this elementary math concept for example:
Write numbers FROM expanded form TO standard form using decimals...blah blah blah
Say
This is just a sneak peek at what I'm up against here....
Yeah, yeah, I know there are people out there who look at this as child's play, but there are lots of people, especially adults, who haven't been in a classroom setting for a while. I can do basic math (i.e. add, subtract, multiply, and divide), taught myself how to deal with fractions several months ago, make change, etc., but I am obviously out of the loop when it comes to tackling the finer points of basic math concepts.
But, as the saying goes, "We're never too old to learn!"
I'm cooking frozen hamburgers right now; does anybody want one?! LOL
I'm taking a break from venting to listen to a lynda.com video on using XHTML to create web pages. It's the 'language' that makes the internet run.
